Abrasive Wheels

This course is provided by YHC in Yeovil or across the South West at your premises*. Two versions or the course are available which can be either YHC certificated or NPORS accredited. The first variant is awareness including a dry classroom practical session mounting and changing different wheels, with the second including a practical session using machines to cut a variety of materials.

The Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations1998 (PUWER1998) are applicable in all work places and cover abrasive wheel machines. They state that the abrasive wheel must be mounted by a person who has been trained for this purpose and is therefore deemed a competent person.
Who should attend.

This course will be suitable for factory workers, construction operatives, vehicle technicians, mechanical and civil engineers and any person required to mount an abrasive wheel to a portable machine and or a bench/pedestal grinder. There are no pre-requites for delegates attending this course.

Course Objective

• Understand the nature of the hazards and identify the causes
• Identify and understand requirements and responsibilities under the current legislation
• Understand the characteristics of abrasive wheels, the nature of the hazards and causes
• Understand and interpret the marking system of abrasive wheels
• Recognise the need for careful handling of abrasive wheels and carry out visual checks
• Understand and identify what speeds should be adhered to in wheel selection
• Identify main components and understand their functions
• Mount an abrasive wheel and /or a diamond blade
• Understand dressing a wheel and identify dressers (bench grinders)
• Adjust work rests correctly (bench grinders)
• Use operating precautions, PPE and carry out pre-use checks
• Demonstrate their knowledge on abrasive wheels and diamond blades

• Truing and dressing the wheel
• Mounting a diamond blade
• Fault finding


Delegates will be assessed on their input during the whole course and individually tested during a practical session and a written theory test paper.

YHC 3 year certificated course with dry mounting £50 plus VAT**

NPORS accredited course with photo ID & certificate £75 plus VAT

Duration 1 day

YHC 3 year certificated course with practical cutting session £90 plus VAT**

NPORS accredited course with photo ID & certificate with & cutting session £115 plus VAT

NPORS courses are for a maximum of 6 delegates

NPORS strongly recommend that every delegate has or takes within the previous two years the CITB Health Safety & Environmental Test which will be noted on the photo ID card

*A suitable room with heat light and power and an area for practical use must be available and a minimum of 4 delegates
